I've been being very slack about updating this. Poor.
400 Free, 300 Free Kick, 200 Back, 100 Back Kick
8*100 IM Order
(I'm missing a set here, but I really can't remember what it was)
300 Free, 300 Free Kick, 200 Choice, 200 Choice Kick
12X100 IM Order KICKING
FC : 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 125, 100, 75, 50, 25 off equal seconds.

|Another week, another session
Yeah, I'm supposed to do two a week at least, but I was busy on Friday.
300 FC, 300 Bk, 300 Choice
4X75 Fly - 1:30
4X75 Bk - 1:30
4x75 Brst - 1:35
4X75 FC - 1:10
4X200 - 3:10
4X200 - 3:00
4X200 - 2:50
|Tuesday, February 8th, 2005|
Sunday's session was...rather hard, rather good.
500 Free, 500 Choice
10X100 Frontcrawl, odds drill, evens kick off 2:10.
4X100 off 1:30
2X200 off 2:00
1X400 off 6:00 (went 5:23)
2X200 off 2:55
4X100 off 1:25
12X50 medley order. (Struggled on this one)
Southern Counties was...interesting...
50 Free = 28.64 (That's OK, but no better than that)
100 Back = 1:12.02 (Appalling, absolutely dreadful. Went out too slow, came back too slow, died).
50 Back = 32.81 (surprisingly pleased with this! Not bad at all)
100 Free = 1:04.49 (Just...abysmal.)
200 Back = 2:39.74 (Very poor - out in 1:14, back in 1:25...talk about dying...)
Still, some benchmarks laid down. Need to get myself training a bit more, work a bit harder, get some fitness back...
|Wednesday, January 26th, 2005|
This weekend marks my return to competition after many years (tm).
I'm off to the wonderful Crystal Palace National Sports Centre for the Southern Counties Long Course Masters Championship.
I have entered the following events...
50, 100 and 200 Back
50, 100, 200 and 400 m FC.
The FC event is the one that's worrying me. The programme works out like this.
So, do I do the 400 Free?
1) It's one of my favourite events
2) I need to get some kind of time, so I'm not guessing for the next one.
3) It'll be fun.
1) I'm not fit enough to do it - there's almost zero chance of me making the time I entered.
2) It might affect my afternoon events. In fact, worrying about it might affect my morning events too.
I have to make the decision before the events start on Saturday.
I'm very nervous, by the way, as this rambling post can attest to.

|It's been a long time coming
Long time no update. Was ill and then away over Christmas. I've just done my third session back. The first went so badly I couldn't bring myself to write it up. This is the one from yesterday...
800 FC, descending to 1:30 pace (yeah, right - last 100 was 1:17)
5X100 FC Kick off 2:15
300 FC off 4:30
250 FC off 3:45
200 FC off 3:00
150 FC off 2:15
100 FC off 1:30
1 min rest.
100 FC off 1:25
150 FC off 2:10
200 FC off 2:55
250 FC off 3:40
300 FC off 4:25
Here's what I did - I was aiming at 1:20 pace throughout. 3:58, 3:19, 2:40, 1:59, 1:20. 1:20, 2:00, 2:45 (started to slip), 3:30, 4:12. Overall, not bad, though I screwed up the rest on the second 100, and had to adjust on the 150, which contributed to my losing pacing.
4X50 Fly on 60
4X50 Back on 60
4X50 Brst on 70
4X50 FC on 45.
(Confession time : I only did one of the breast fifties - I was struggling with tightness in my calf, and with being rubbish at breast).
Total distance : 4900m. I did 4700, given the breast I missed out, and the fact that I only did 150 easy after the big fc set.
Still, not bad.
|Monday, December 6th, 2004|
|Sunday, 5 December
150 FC Kick
250 BK Kick
4X100 Fly off 2:00
4X100 Bk off 2:00
4X100 Brst off 2:00 (boy did I struggle)
4X100 FC off 1:40, I think.
25,50,75,100,125,150, 150,125,100,75,50,25 FC off even rest (i.e. 25, 50...)
Total : 4350.
Oooh...Coach annoyed me...on the backstroke, he put someone else in front (despite me being quicker) Mental hissyfit thrown. Unhappy strokingback
. It turns out, this was to make her swim quicker, as he knew I'd chase her down. Sneaky coach!
|Friday, December 3
Got to pool very late due to aggressive stupidity (forgot to take kit to work).
Only did about 200m warm up.
8X50 FC off 55
8X50 Other off 60
8x50 FC kicking/drill thing. I got used as a demonstrator. That's not happened since I was 18...and everyone else in the pool was seven...and even then it was "that's kind of how it works."
6X100 FC off 1:50
4X200 Other off 4 mins. I only did three, as a result of going 2:58 on the second one. (Remember that Arthur Hill pool is 27.5 m long - this converts to about 2:39)
|Monday, November 29th, 2004|
|Short Sharp Shock Treatment.
We only had the pool for an hour.
300 FC, 200 FC drill
300 Back, 200 Bk drill
15 X 150 FC in groups of 3 off
with 50 easy between each group. Regrettably, I missed the very last one - I couldn't quicken enough to get below 2:00 and break the 1:57, 2:00, 2:03 pace I held throughout. Still, a good effort...
3500m in an hour is quite a lot...
|Saturday, November 27th, 2004|
200 Swim, 200 Drill, 200 Swim, 200 Kick, 200 Swim
5 X 100 on 2:15 (except for number 4 on 2:30), Swim, Drill, Swim, Kick, Swim
X 3, once on each of fly back and breast
20 X 50, 5 on 60, 5 on 55, 5 on 60, 5 on 55
300 Swim down
Two things from this...
One, on the last 100 back, I was half a length ahead of the next person.
By the end of the last on breast, I was 3 lengths behind. Yes, my breaststroke is that awful.
Two, on the 50's I just couldn't shake the guy behind me. It was getting really annoying...he was closing onto my feet really quickly, and I couldn't get clear water. I asked number 3 in the lane, afterwards, whether he was going on the five. Unsurprisingly, I got a "No...more like three, maybe two". I hate this. When I was about 15, doing this repeatedly would get you kicked (I've never had the best of temperaments). Not only is it cheating, it _does_ disadvantage me. I spent all those 50's feeling harried, and like I wasn't swimming fast enough. Very frustrating.
|Tuesday, November 23rd, 2004|
With South Reading Leisure Centre closed, we were at Leighton Park school, which turned out to be a lovely little pool, even if we had to put the lane ropes in ourselves (and do some running repairs on the backstroke flags).
300 FC, 300 Back, 300 Choice
8X50 "Overlap" IM. Or "Revolving" IM. Or whatever you want to call it. Fly-Back Back-Breast Breast-FC FC-Fly. Off 1 minute (generous!)
12X25 off 35
6X50 off 55
3X100 off 1:55
2X150 off 2:50
1X300 off 4:30 (did 3:55 - that's 5:14 pace, which was quite pleasing given the work before and everything)
2X150 off 2:45
3X100 off 1:50
6X50 off 50
12X25 off 30
100 easy to finish...
I've entirely lost the Episode counting system, and I can't be bothered to sort it out. Which is a pity, as I was looking forward to getting to episode XXX, and to episode XL. Ah well.
400 Swim, 200 Kick, 200 Pull, 200 Drill.
4 X 200 Kick. Cue _much bitching_ from me. I dislike kick sets, as I'm not very good at them. However, I usually do them willingly. I felt (and still feel) that this was too much kick too early - I've been having occasional problems with cramp, and this was really risking it...
50, 100, 150, 200 X 4, FC, Other, FC, Other.
I didn't get cramp, and I swum really hard on the long set. Very pleased...
|Monday, November 8th, 2004|
8x50 FC Catchup
8X50 Kick (not FC)
6X100 Pull off 1:50 (all between 1:17 and 1:19)
16X25 Stroke 1
8X50 Stroke 2
4X100 Stroke 3
2X200 Stroke 4
Much to my disgust, I was on for a really good time on the last 200. I went 2:46 for 200m Back on the first one, and I was under 2:40 pace when I wiped out on someone doing a swimdown. Ah well. Pity. Overall, it was a great session and I'm definitely swimming well. I've now got two weeks off, partly due to pool closures. That's a pity too.

|Lost count of episodes.
I'll work it out later. I'm a couple behind, but I have them on my work computer and I'll backdate them.
800m, alternating 100 Free, 100 Other
600m Comprising 25 Fly, 25 FC, 25 bk, 25 FC, 25 brst, 75 fc X 3
8x25m FC on 40
8x25m FC on 40
8x25m Fly with 15m under water on 40
8x25m Back with 15m under water on 40
6X100m FC on 1:50
3X75m Medley order
3500m total - 3850 in normal money (Arthur Hill is 27.5m long)
The 8x25 were surprisingly hard...

|Episodes X and XI combined
From last week. I can't remember all of Friday's session...
800, 150FC, 50 Choice X 4
20X50 off .55, rotating leader.
50 off 1.30
25 off 40
Sunday's I managed to note down
200 FC, 200 Bk, 200 FC, 200 Br, 200Fc
10X100 Kick, 100 FC, 100 other, 2:20
6X50 Hypoxic, 13+ strokes between breaths.
10X100 IM, 2:00
2 on 1:50,
2 on 1:45
2 on 1:40
Total : 4250m
Was away in Wales this weekend, so didn't go. Back on Friday.
|Monday, October 11th, 2004|
|Episode IX : Thirty stories high
Friday was depressing. Sunday was brilliant. Here's the session...
200 Free Kick
200 Free Pull
16X25 on 40
8X50 on 55
4X100 on 1:40
2X200 on 3:10
1X400 on 6:20
And back down.
We ran out of time before the 16X25 on the way back, making for a total of 4600m.
I paced myself carefully, aiming to work off 1:20 base, so I was doing just sub-20 on the 25's, just sub-40 on the 50's (though I got a bit enthusiastic and went 35 on a couple), between 1:15 and 1:20 on the 100's, 2:43 and 2:47 on the 200's and 5:29 on the 400m. While these times are not great (and I really struggled on the way back down!) I was really quite pleased.

|Episode VIII: The bottom of the well
Last night was depressing.
1X100 Free sprint
I was OK through the warmup and the kick & Drill, but I took the 100's free out way too quickly.
Then when I tried to do the sprint, I cramped up immediately.

|I can feel it coming in the mail...
Or the post. My Allen's order arrived today. I've been using a pair of Zoggs goggles that I borrowed. They're OK, but now I have two nice pairs of Godfrey II's. It's just like the old days again. *sigh*
When I was small, Dad used to take me to Swimgear in Finchley which was Mr Godfrey's shop. I think it's still there though Mr Godfrey retired many years ago. I recall him being a very nice bloke.
I also have a new hat - it's black and silicone with a small Nike swoosh on each side and a new kickboard, as I threw away the old one. I think.
Heh. I could do with getting a new swimbag at some point. Hmm... Sounds like a christmas present idea to me!

|Episode VII : Getting one's kicks in
Session number five today.
150 FC, 100 Kick FC
150 Back, 100 Kick back
150 Choice, 100 kick choice
6X100 Frontcrawl drill
6X100 Kick off 2.15
5X100 FC off 2:10, ten seconds rest at fifty
5X100 FC off 2:10, ten seconds rest at fifty
6X100 Drill choice
That's a 4K session. The kick set in the middle was nasty, and I was very pleased to make it on the rest. I was more disappointed with the 100's FC. I was lactating up really quickly, which meant I couldn't put as much effort in as I wanted to.
Hopefully, my order from Allens will be with me soon and I can have some proper goggles and a kickboard and a better hat.

|Episode VI : Slowly, Softly
I hate breaststroke.
And I had to swim Fly for the first time last night. My fly has always been fairly effective for about 25m, then rather rapidly tailing off. Nothing has changed.
10X50, 5 off 70, 5 off 60
Plus about 200 in swim-downs. I didn't quite manage all of it - I was about 50 short on the 800 pull, and I only did 6 of the fly and 3 of the breast and didn't do six lengths of the first 200 free having dissolved into a coughing fit.
